Paravel

I co-founded Paravel, a digital services agency, with Dave Rupert and Trent Walton in 2006. We worked with numerous clients to build and ship lasting experiences on the web, including Wired, Starbucks, Khoros, Adobe, Etsy, a16z, and Spoke (acquired by Okta).

Roles: Lead Designer

Skills: Strategy, Research, User Testing, Design Systems, Prototyping, UX/UI Design, Visual Design, Branding, Consulting

Wired

Wired brought us on board to help launch their first redesign in over eight years. By working directly with various in-house teams, we helped ensure that the new site met their evolving design, performance, and revenue needs. Our main goal was to help unify the web and print experiences with a more robust, responsive design.

The new design received write-ups in HuffPost, It's Nice That, and an announcement by former Wired editor Scott Dadich.

Khoros

In collaboration with a team of in-house designers and managers, we had three months to build a new website announcing the Lithium and Spredfast merger. We were initially hired by Spredfast, so on top of building a new site under a tight deadline, we also had another new team to work with. We used a design system and a prototype-centric process to build while a different team developed the new company name and branding. The result was a highly visible process, with the new site shipping on schedule.

Starbucks

Starbucks brought us on to explore new homepage directions and dive deeper into their Starbucks Rewards loyalty program. For the homepage, they wanted to optimize the site for different screen sizes and go for a more earthy, organic feel. We also explored personalization options for Starbucks Rewards, including a tier on their homepage with different member states.

Austin Chamber

While the initial ask was to provide style guidance along with a handful of page templates, it quickly became clear that the Austin Chamber would benefit from having a way to design, build, and update many pages at scale. We led a rebrand, including new color, type, and icons, and built their first design system that powered the redesign of over 500 pages.

Andreessen Horowitz

Andreessen Horowitz needed a better way to manage the companies in their $35B portfolio and wanted the experience optimized for the newly released iPad. We built an internal tool where their team could easily reference information on their portfolio companies, create briefings, and manage their various assets.

Spoke

Spoke uses A.I. to manage and maintain a company's internal knowledge base. We worked with the company’s founders to build a new homepage and blog to convey the features of their product, all built on WordPress. Spoke was acquired by Okta in 2021.

DayTrip

DayTrip was a Paravel side-project that made it easy to find something to do within driving distance of Austin. We created an account system where users could save and share their favorite spots, create itineraries, and see a feed of their friend's activity. DayTrip was a bootstrapped project; we got great traction in Austin but weren't able to scale the experience into other cities.

The Many Faces Of

The Many Faces Of (TMFO) combined our love for exploring new web technologies with our love for the silver screen. Each post was a deep dive into an actor, series, or genre. We originally launched the site in 2010 when new CSS properties and webfonts suddenly made the browser a much more interesting place. We used TMFO as an experimental playground where we could hone our design and front-end skills. It's still one of my favorite projects of all time.
